Yes, you need a ground wire in almost all guitar wiring scenarios or you will get bad buzzing from all sorts of sources -- fluorescent lights, radio signals, etc. I am not an expert on guitar wiring by any means but I know that when I have tried to wire up a guitar without a ground wire to the bridge the results were very bad.Paul R. The SD style means splitting the outputs wires from the humbuckers and running single-conductor wires to the toggle switch, rather than leaving them together as much as possible. I'm not sure whether that might have an audible effect on shielding under most circumstances, or not, but I'd imagine it could. It's worth noting that if you use a Switchcraft or Switchcraft-style 3 way, the two center connectors will need to be bridged as shown.Paul R.
